Marioneta Negocios, the titular woman who is wearing shoulderpads, lands in Ecuador to transform the
humble cuy (guinea pigs) from a food source into a purse pet ala chihuahuas or shih tzus.
Women Wearing Shoulderpads is FUN. Sharp wit and a lovely visual style AND a great soundtrack.
Will this finally be the work of art that finally manhandles me into learning spanish to a point that
I don't enter a state of shock when attempting to pronounce anything with a ñ? My mother would be proud.
If Studio Fantasma's work flow on Frankelda's Book of Spooks was continued over to WWS, the resin faces of
the puppets(?) give a delightful sculputural look to the ladies, and the live action flourishes when theres an insert shot
showing off the character's features, whether it be Espada's (a matador who slays oversized cuys for sport)
shaking hands reacting to an especially devastating moment, or Doña Quispe's (a well known buisness woman
who made a name for herself by creating a cuy-meat empire) lips pursed to show off her bright purple lipstick,
it's such a fun choice!!!
Not to get too off topic, but Frankelda's Book of Spooks, while
visually very fun, and I am excited to watch Soy Frankelda whenever that gets distributed to
english speaking audiences, I will warn that the english dubbing, specifically when they burst into song
(yes it is a musical) is downright AWFUL. I don't have access to the original dub, so maybe it was not
good in the first place, but the lyrics sound like someone copy and pasted the spanish words into google translate
without a care in the world for rythym or flow. AWFUL. AWFUL!!!!! If there is not an easily accesible
(I try to avoid streaming services because I hate spending money) spanish dub of Soy Frankelda (with subs of course)
I'll probably just skip on it.
I highly recommend WWS, with there being 7 episodes out as of 09/22/2025 with the next (final episode?) being release
next week, and each episode coming in at around 11 minutes. And consider giving the Polyester Zine article covering WWS a read, as well
as the creator Gonzalo Cordova's Reddit AMA a once over. (Adult Swim give me a piece of merch, perhaps a tasteful poster? A graphic tee? Please.)
